Spotting Elder Fraud and Scams

Spotting Elder Fraud and Scams

Fraud targeting older adults is sadly on the rise. Criminals use phone calls, emails, social media, and even doorstep visits to gain trust. In the UK, tens of thousands of older people fall victim to scams each year, losing not just money but also confidence, making the average age of a scam victim 74. At Avanti Homecare, we take this issue seriously. Awareness is the best defence.

Red Flags to Look Out For

Scams come in many forms, but most share the same warning signs:

  • Unexpected calls, texts, or emails asking for money or personal details.
  • Offers that sound too good to be true.
  • Requests for secrecy, urgency, or pressure to act fast.
  • Fake websites or emails pretending to be from banks, HMRC, or delivery companies.

Carers often spot the early signs of concern: a client mentioning a strange phone call, new paperwork on the table, or unfamiliar visitors. We take these clues seriously and work with families to make sure the person is protected.

Doorstep and phone scams

Some scammers knock on doors offering repairs, gardening, or charity collections. Always:

  • Check identification before allowing anyone in.
  • Avoid cash payments at the door.
  • Display a “no cold callers” sticker near the entrance.

For phone scams:

  • Register the number with the Telephone Preference Service to block cold calls.
  • Hang up on suspicious calls and never press buttons or give details.
  • Report the number to Action Fraud or your phone provider.

Online and digital safety

Digital scams are becoming more advanced. Encourage safe habits:

  • Use strong passwords and change them regularly.
  • Do not click links in unsolicited emails or texts.
  • Verify messages by calling official numbers directly.
  • Keep antivirus software updated.

At Avanti, our carers are trained to help clients navigate basic digital tasks safely and to spot anything unusual online.

What to do if you suspect a scam

If someone has given away money or information, act quickly.

  • Contact the bank immediately to freeze accounts.
  • Report to Action Fraud or call 101.
  • Inform family members and carers so they can monitor further contact.
  • Report locally to Derby Trading Standards.

It is important to stay calm and supportive. Scams often leave people feeling embarrassed, but they are never at fault, fraudsters are skilled manipulators.

How Avanti helps keep people safe

We include scam awareness as part of our training, so carers can recognise risks and report concerns. Our regular check-ins with clients and families mean problems are often caught early.

We also encourage open conversations. Talking about scams helps remove stigma and gives everyone confidence to stay alert.

Staying one step ahead

Protection begins with awareness. By talking openly, checking regularly, and trusting instincts, families and carers can stop fraud before it starts.

Safety at home is about more than preventing harm. It is about helping people feel secure, respected, and confident every day. If you are concerned about scams or anything affecting a loved one’s wellbeing, contact our team for advice and support you can trust.

A huge thank you from all the team at
